Veteran Metal Detecting UK: A Hobby with Purpose

Veterans face unique challenges when reintegrating into civilian life, and finding activities that promote relaxation, focus, and camaraderie can make all the difference. Ian Coulthard, a veteran with 13 years of service in the 5th Fusiliers, 100 PNR Squadron, and other units, has found a way to combine mindfulness, community, and the great outdoors through metal detecting.

After serving in OP Herrick 13 and 18 and managing the mental health effects of PTSD and Bipolar Disorder Type 2, Ian discovered metal detecting as a therapeutic outlet. The activity helped him clear his mind, stay present, and enjoy the outdoors in a way he hadn’t before. Realising its benefits, Ian wanted to share this newfound passion with fellow veterans and launched Veteran Metal Detecting UK.

Ian's goal is simple yet powerful: to create a network where veterans can connect, organise dig days, and even host weekend events involving camping and family participation. These activities foster mental well-being and provide a sense of belonging, with the added potential to raise funds for charities.

"I started this group to help veterans enjoy days out, feel part of something, and just have some fun," Ian shared. "It's about creating a positive distraction while connecting with others who understand your journey."

Veteran Metal Detecting UK operates as a not-for-profit initiative, with any associated costs, such as land use fees, directed toward event logistics. The focus remains on helping veterans rediscover joy and connection while uncovering hidden treasures beneath the soil.

If you or someone you know would like to get involved, share this initiative with your networks! Ian’s inspiring story highlights how veterans can support one another through shared hobbies and community efforts.

Ian currently runs Veterans Metal Detecting UK in Gateshead, North East England and the Durham and Northumberland county boarders.
